iPhone 17 Pro Max design will be significantly different this year: Report

iPhone 17 Pro Max expectations: The 2025 iPhones will reportedly feature a "significant change" in terms of design, according to latest reports.

In Short

  • iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumoured to feature a significant design overhaul
  • The phone's camera module will reportedly look very different this year
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max's dynamic island is also believed to be smaller

Apple’s 2025 flagship, the iPhone 17 series, is believed to feature a “significant design change”, according to fresh leaks from Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station (via MacRumors). As per the report, the highly-anticipated iPhone 17 Air will feature a horizontal, bar-shaped camera bump, while the Pro models will adopt a "large horizontal matrix design" on the rear. This is in line with a previous report that suggested that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will come with a part-aluminum, part-glass back panel. As per the report, the top half of the iPhone will be made of aluminum and feature a rectangular camera bump, while the bottom half will remain glass to enable wireless charging.

Meanwhile, leaker Jon Prosser had also shared some renders recently, of the iPhone 17 Pro, which showed a triangular camera arrangement like the one we already see on the existing iPhone Pro models. However, as per the renders, this triangular camera arrangement would be enclosed in an all-new rectangular bar that stretches across the device’s back.

That’s not all. There have been many other leaks in the past that suggest a similar design overhaul. The redesign is particularly for the iPhone 17 Pro Max variants. Reports also suggest that the iPhone 17 Pro Max might come with a smaller Dynamic Island. That will be thanks to the metalens technology that will allow the FaceID components to be more compact. Apple introduced the Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 Pro models, replacing the notch. Pro variants since then have featured the Dynamic Island.

For the ones who don’t know, the Dynamic Island includes the front camera and Face ID sensors. Along with it, the island also works as a hub for alerts and notifications.

Notably, the change in the design of the dynamic island is rumoured to be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The standard variant and the Plus will apparently continue to use the existing dynamic island design.

Interestingly, the Weibo leak also claims that Apple is working on a large foldable iPhone, a rumour that has been going around a long time. There is no other information around the foldable, unfortunately.

The iPhone 17 series, probably including the iPhone 17 Air, is expected to launch in September 2025.
