Apple is hosting an event tomorrow, i.e., February 19, where the company is expected to launch the iPhone SE 4, with rumours suggesting some major upgrades. Do note, while the rumoured specs and features might not seem like a huge leap when compared to the three-year-old iPhone SE 3, the upcoming model is shaping up to be a pretty solid upgrade, with talk of a new design, better performance, and improved cameras. Of course, it was Apple CEO Tim Cook who teased the upcoming launch event, fuelling hopes that the much-awaited iPhone SE 4 would finally make its debut. Although the teaser did not reveal any details about the product, industry insiders believe the spotlight will be on the new iPhone SE model.

Rumours suggest that the iPhone SE 4 will undergo a big makeover, moving away from the traditional compact design of the iPhone SE 3 with thick bezels. Instead, it is expected to feature a look inspired by the iPhone 14, complete with an aluminium and glass build, flat edges, and possibly Apple’s Ceramic Shield for enhanced durability. The familiar Touch ID is likely to be replaced with Face ID, aligning the SE with Apple’s current lineup of iPhones. The display is expected to have slimmer bezels and a notch, similar in size to that of the iPhone 14.

The new iPhone SE is also rumoured to come with a 6.1-inch OLED display, a notable upgrade from the 4.7-inch IPS LCD screen on the iPhone SE 3. This change would bring better contrast, deeper blacks, and more vibrant colours. However, the OLED display will likely support a 60Hz refresh rate.

Under the hood, the iPhone SE 4 is expected to be powered by the A18 chipset, the same processor as the standard iPhone 16. However, some reports have suggested that Apple might opt for the A17 Pro chipset instead, which would still provide excellent performance. Either way, whichever chipset finally makes its way to the iPhone SE 4, the good news is that the phone will likely support Apple Intelligence, given both chips — A18 and A17 Pro — support Apple’s suite of AI features on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro, respectively. And if there is support for Apple Intelligence, expect the phone to have at least 8GB RAM, as that is the minimum requirement to run Apple Intelligence.

In terms of photography, the iPhone SE 4 is also expected to see a major camera upgrade. It is rumoured to feature a 48-megapixel rear sensor, a solid bump from the 12-megapixel camera on the iPhone SE 3. The front camera is also expected to get a boost with a 24-megapixel sensor.

Other expected changes include a bigger battery, potentially 3,279mAh, replacing the Lightning port with a USB Type-C, and introducing MagSafe wireless charging for faster charging speeds. Additionally, the SE 4 might include an Action Button, similar to the one introduced with the iPhone 15 series, allowing users to customise shortcuts and functions.

While the upgraded features sound exciting, the price will be crucial. The iPhone SE 4 is expected to be slightly more expensive than its predecessor but is likely to stay under Rs 50,000 in India — probably Rs 49,900 for its base variant — making it an appealing option for anyone who wants to get an iPhone on a relatively affordable budget.
